Activities

Complete 8 activities.

  1. Learn the origin and meaning of 25 words used in everyday life derived from the language you study.

  2. What careers are available that use foreign languages? Make a list of as many careers (e.g. translator, museum curator) you can think of. Speak to someone who uses a language other than English in their work. Find out what education he or she received and what his or her job entails.

  3. Research the life and accomplishments of any historical figure whose native language was the one you studied. Present your findings to a group in a creative manner.

  4. Write a short story which incorporates cultural aspects of the people who speak (spoke) the language you study. OR, Write a poem or short story in the language you study. Share it with others.

  5. Adapt 3 word games (e.g. Scrabble) to the language you study. Play them with a group.

  6. Join a language club at your school. If none exists, form a small group of people who are interested in languages. Try to meet regularly, discuss or learn something new each time. OR, If you are a Latin student, find out about the Junior Classical League and what it offers. If possible attend a state or national convention.

  7. Tell a story in the language you study. Pay attention to pronunciation, communication of emotions, and gestures. Practice in front of a mirror. Will someone who does not know this language be able to understand what happens in the story? Perform for others.

  8. Teach simple phrases and vocabulary of the language you study to a group of younger girls. Try to use words that have English derivatives and phrases that are applicable to their lives. OR, Arrange to become a tutor for someone who studies your language.

  9. Find out what kinds of clothing people speaking the language you study have worn throughout the years. Draw a picture of your favorite costume, labeling each part with your language. If possible, make a costume for yourself to wear.

  10. Begin a collection of language and cultural items. Find at least 5 different items that are printed in your language. These might include coins, stamps, books, posters, etc. Show your collection to others.

  11. Participate in a national language exam or academic competition in your language (e.g. Latin certamen).

  12. Organize with your troop a language/culture dinner. Have people bring food from the country you are studying, display your projects, wear your costume, read your stories, play games, and have fun!
