The Find Yourself with Satellites and GPS IP is an interest project from the Girl Scouts of Colorado Council. It is part of the Girls Go Tech Interest Project Patches Series.

Note: The following council earned recognition will be LIMITED EDITION and will be available until existing inventory is exhausted and then discontinued.

In order to earn this Interest Project:

Required

Build a satellite using the interactive online exhibit built by Lockheed Martin Enterprise Information Systems for the San Jose Tech Museum (www.thetech.org). This activity takes about 15 minutes.

Learn

  1. Global Position Systems can find any location on the planet. Utilizing a GPS website, locate the following places:

    1. Your House

    2. Your School

    3. Your State Capital

    4. The White House

    5. Mount Rushmore

    6. The Effile Tower

    7. The Great Pyramid

    8. Machu Pichu - Peru

  2. Research 3 professions that utilize GPS.

  3. Learn how satellite phones work and when are they most useful.

  4. GPS is useful in disaster situation. Learn how FEMA and other emergency management agency use GPS in a disaster.

Do

  1. Using a personal GPS and a Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO), go on a Geocaching treasure hunt.

  2. Learn how satellite technology is used in the one of the following fields:

    1. Research how the United States Geological Survey uses GPS to map climatic and land mass changes. [WWW]http://education.usgs.gov/

    2. Do an internet search and take part in a online GPS game.

Share

  1. Research 4-6 careers, which involve satellites and/or GPS, including:

    1. Skills and Responsibilities

    2. Work Environment

    3. Training

    4. Education

    5. Earnings

      Share what you have learned with your troop.

  1. Create a list of business that rent or sell GPS equipment. Include rental or purchase costs, terms, etc. Share with your troop or a group of younger girls.

  2. Create a hike for younger Girl Scouts, using a handheld GPS.
