As you travel abroad, you will change time zones. Find out how many time zones you will cross and how that will affect your arrival time to your destination and the time on your watch. Find out if you will cross the international date line and whether you gain or lose a day and what happens to the date when you come home. When you travel north or south, the number of daylight hours changes. Explain how you will plan activities based on the number of daylight hours.

Learn about the everyday customs of the places your are visiting. Learn some everyday words and phrases like hello, goodbye, please, thank you, and where is the bathroom. For example, do the people shake hands, bow, hug or kiss on the cheek as a greeting? What gestures would be inappropriate for your country? Would the people be offended if you took pictures? Who should you tip?

Foods vary from country to country. Find out about everyday foods of your destination and eat a typical meal. Find out if the same foods are available where you live.

International travel requires a passport and sometimes a visa. Find out how to get a passport, and get one if you don't already have one. Find out if a visa is required and obtain one if necessary.

Every country has its own money. Learn what the money of the country is called. What is the exchange rate? Will you need to purpose local currency or will they accept American dollars? Learn how to count their money so that you can make sure you are getting the correct change when you make a purchase. Learn how to carry your money safely. Find out about the various types of money belts and purchase one if necessary.

Different climates require different kinds of clothing. Is your destination humid or dry, hot or cold? Select the appropriate clothing for your trip.

Learn about the flora and fauna of the country. Are there any endangered species? Find out what is being done to protect them.
Technology

Some countries also require that you get immunizations. Using the internet, find out if immunizations will be required for your trip and arrange with your doctor or clinic to get them. Find out how long you need to take them before you leave and if you need to continue taking them after you return.

Visit a camera store or website. Investigate the various kinds of cameras that are available, such as digital, disposable, 35mm, and waterproof. Compare the costs of the cameras and the costs of film possessing to help you decide which camera would be most appropriate fo your trip.

Investigate how the country has developed their technology. Do they have electricity, TV, computers? Would your cell phone work?
Service Projects

Find out about the needs of the community you will be visiting, such as school supplies, medical supplies, blankets, batteries, or a computer. Collect the supplies and make arrangements to deliver them. Make sure that any electrical devices will work with their power.

Exchange information with the local people by arranging a home stay. Find out about their schools and home life and tell them about yours.

Teach a song, dance, or game to a group of school children of Girl Scouts or Girl Guides. Then have them teach you one of theirs.

Prepare a visual presentation of your trip and present it at a Senior Center.
Career Exploration

Many American companies have divisions in foreign countries. Find out if there are any American companies and how those companies are impacting the local economy and ecosystem.

Learn about the industry of the country. Discuss the kinds of jobs that are available to the local people with your troop or group.

Brainstorm five career choices involving travel. Choose one of them and find out what kind of education or special training is needed.

Write an article about your trip and submit it to a local newspaper or magazine.
